I don't know if this helps or not I just brushed from the bottom to the top, in other words from the back of the shoe to the top that worked best on my boots.

The narrow, hard rubber ridge on the side of the head is for the "welt"- the seam where the shoe upper meets the sole. I use the nylon/brass bristle side for nubuck and the rubber nodule side for suede.
