I wanted a kalimba that could play more than just C major without having to retune the whole instrument. Having 34 tines gives this instrument a good amount of range, though the higher tines are dead no matter how I adjust them. The overall tone of the instrument isn’t as rich as my 21-key kalimba and I’ve had to retune frequently as the tines seem to move out of tune easily. I purchased stickers to mark the enharmonic (basically duplicate C and F) tines; having the upper deck of tines takes some getting used to, but I got what I wanted out of this.

Looks really nice. The bottom tier keys sound really nice and clear. The top tier not so much. Some of the higher keys hardly ring at all. Very dull sound compared to the bottom tier. I was hoping for a much better sound for the money. I would not buy again...

This is a chromatic kalimba. The lower 17 tines are tuned to C, in diatonic fashion, just like a standard 17 tine kalimba. The upper middle 4 tines are tuned below C, extending the kalimba's lower range, like a 21 tine kalimba. The remaining upper tines are tuned to be the sharp of the tine positioned directly below it. There is no learning curve to play this 34 tine chromatic kalimba! I simply love it. It's my kalimba soul-mate.
