Hi, the depth of the hook is 35mm. So as long as you have a door less than 35mm you'll be fine.

Q: Will this take A4 sized magazines/ school books?

Yes it will take A4 magazines, I have the plastic wallets that hold A4 and they fit in.

Q: Would I be able to hang on a cupboard door and still be able for shut the cupboard door

This goes over my door and still closes but it has scraped away a bit of the paint where the hooks are. The hooks are thin - it will probably depend on your door.
