Will the ink dry out eventually if you don’t use it fast enough? 3,000 pages is a lot.

Not saying it won't dry out after 6 months, but my MFC-J805DW sat in the office for just over a year unused. When we got back into the office, I printed a test page that was crap, but every page after that was fine. Just replaced the ink after 3 years (only two years of use...)

Does it use most or all of the ink in the cartridge or does it wast ink?

Your Brother MFCJ4535DW machine will perform maintenance purges of the print head at regular intervals. The cleaning is to ensure consistent print quality and prevent damage to the print head. These purges remove any air or debris that may have gotten into the print head manifold. Your machine will use the minimum amount of ink necessary to perform this operation. The ink consumption will be also based on your printing behavior, please keep in mind that the machine has only 4 basic colors, it will combine 2 or more colors to get to the desired one. You can't change or turn off regular cleaning cycles. The cleaning time is built into the machine's firmware and is not user adjustable

Has anyone tried using cardstock to see if it will work?

Unfortunately cardstock is not listed as a recommended paper to be used with the Brother MFCJ4335DW machine. Using paper that is not recommended can cause hardware issues to the printer that are not covered by the Brother Limited Warranty. We suggest you to check the list of compatible paper or contact us for assistance.

If I run out of say, one color, but have lots of black ink, will the printer still work?

The "B&W Print Only - Replace Ink" using your Brother MFCJ4335DW machine message will appear when one or more of your color ink cartridges have reached the end of its life. While "B&W Print Only - Replace Ink" appears on the screen, you can continue to use your machine in the following ways: 1. You can always scan to PC or media even if your machine displays "Replace Ink." 2. Based on your printing volume and page coverage, you can print up to four (4) weeks in B&W mode. 3. You'll be able to receive and print B&W faxes. If you're sent a color fax, the machine will convert the face and print it in black and white. 4. You won't be able to print on photo paper or other special media during B&W mode. Only plain paper can be used. 5. Place the machine in Grayscale mode via the print driver to ensure you can continue to print documents.
