Run, don't walk, away from UFP brake products
Run, don't walk, away from UFP brake products if you plan to use your trailer in salt water. My 4 year old Magic Tilt trailer has UFP brand 4 wheel disc brakes and a UFP brand brake actuator with reverse solenoid. When the trailer was about 2 years old the brakes would lock up on all 4 wheels after storage. No amount of washing down after use would prevent all 4 wheels from locking up. I decided to try to repair, rather than replace, the UFP brakes. After I started the project I gave up in despair as it was clear the UFP replacement parts would fail just as fast as the original parts. Here is what I found: 1. The master cylinder had to be replaced because the top cover is not designed for salt water and rusted out. Problem was I could not even get the large pin out that held the master cylinder in place. No amount of either hammering or use of my huge bench vice (and cheater pipe!) could break the pin loose. Pretty sure the pin had rusted/corroded to the aluminum of the master cylinder. So not only was this UFP actuator not built to last it was not even built to be serviced. Add to that the reverse solenoid stopped working (I could hear it click but it did not stop the flow of brake fluid) and add to that UFP used a steel nipple to connect the reverse solenoid to the master cylinder. What a POS! 2. The brake pad backing was ordinary steel and had rusted and swollen to twice its original size. This was likely the main cause of the brakes locking up after storage. Half of one of the pads was simply gone. 3. The brake caliper was a hybrid of aluminum and cast iron however the piston was ordinary cast iron. The pistons in 3 of the 4 calipers on my trailer had frozen. The one I took off and inspected closely showed the rubber boots/seals around the pistons were cracked and rotted. 4 years old! Cracked and rotted!!! What a POS! 4. The screws used to attach the calipers were ordinary steel with 3/8" allen head. They were nearly impossible to remove. 5. The rotors were rotting/rusting I should add that I have been around boats my entire life, I currently own 9 boats, and I live on salt water. I am no stranger to the effects of salt water and the care required to minimize the effects of salt water. This particular trailer was used 2-3 times per year. Put another way the trailer and the brakes were well cared for and properly washed down after every use. I even went so far as to periodically spray the brakes with Boeshield, a spray on waxlike coating that I have found to be highly effective in mitigating the effects of exposure to salt water. I would very much like to hear from a representative from UFP try to defend the quality of their products. They should be both ashamed and embarrassed to produce such junk!
