Can the clean side spout be removed to use a bottle coupler to attach a clean water bottle to make a gravity flow system like with the Sawyer Squeeze?

It's not recommended that you remove the clean side cover from the Platypus Quickdraw Microfilter completely, as you don't want to contaminate the outlet with dirty water. Is this model freeze proof

No, while it is well enclosed in very cold temperatures you would want to keep with you in a sleeping bag or next to your body while hiking.

Can you backflush this filter and if so, how?

Yes, you just squeeze the clean side so that the water flushes back towards the dirty. While you do have to hold your clean container against the filter (smart bottle, bag, etc) it does make a reasonably good connection that surprisingly doesn't jet water everywhere.

Did anyone else receive one without the dirty side cap?

Not me, it was chilly intact, I would definitely be returning it, it doesn't affect function but in the winter you are going to need that to be able to stow it in a pocket without getting water everywhere.
