Could I put a coat of varnish on the outside to prevent the letters coming off?

The letters won't come off..... Varnish would probably not work if you are trying to "Freeze" the saying. Varnish yellows. Acrylic polyurethane doesn't typically yellow, but would wear off and not work because the cup has to be at temperature for the saying to show. It wouldn't stay at the temperature needed and still dry/harden.
