Austria joined the European Union in 1995.
The history of Austria covers the history of Austria and its predecessor states, from the Early Stone Age to the present state. The name Ostarrîchi (Austria) has been in use since 996 AD when it was a margravate of the Duchy of Bavaria and from 1156 an independent duchy (later archduchy) of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.Austria was dominated by the House of Habsburg and House of Habsburg-Lorraine (Haus Österreich) from 1273 to 1918. In 1806, when Emperor Francis II of Austria dissolved the Holy Roman Empire, Austria became the Austrian Empire and was also part of the German Confederation until the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. In 1867, Austria formed a dual monarchy with Hungary: the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867–1918). When this empire collapsed after the end of World War I in 1918, Austria was reduced to the main, mostly German-speaking areas of the empire (its current frontiers), and adopted the name The Republic of German-Austria. However, union with Germany and the chosen country name were forbidden by the Allies at the Treaty of Versailles. This led to the creation of the First Austrian Republic (1919-1933).

Surprising
Originating from Europe, I am aware of Austria, it’s location and size. I knew a little of its history in the first World War and the fact that it was then part of Austria-Hungary who in fact started the conflict after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo. What I did not know was that it was the center of an incredible empire that went through many periods of expansion and contraction, and that at various times had control of parts of Span, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Ukraine, Croatia, Montenegro, Romania, Bosnia, The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia and Italy with its influence even extending to South America. The book explains the various issues that the country went through while the second book on the Habsburgs details how the family controlled these countries for 650 years!Like the rest of this series, the books were informative, providing detail where necessary to explain the situation but without going into too much to make them hard to read. As a result, it was easy to read and very informative. If you want to learn about the country and this incredible family, these books would be a good choice.

A great summary of the history of Austria and the Habsburg dynasty
This is an interesting history of Austria from the earliest times to the present highlighting some of the influences it had on European development. The emergence of the Habsburg rulers from Switzerland to rule an empire encompassing virtually all of Europe from Vienna set the pattern of rule for all of Europe for centuries.Part I deals with Austrian history and includes the Habsburgs as they relate to Austrian history. The Austrian empire was the center of Europe and when the Habsburgs became emperors of the Holy Roman Empire Austrian influences spread throughout Europe. Under Charles Habsburg influence spread from Eastern Europe to America and the Habsburg family married into every ruling house throughout Europe. Austria became a republic after World War I and entered into world politics.Part II is the story of the Habsburg family from its beginning in Switzerland and tells how they grew to be the major ruling house in Europe. It gives more details about each head of the family and how they were able to make the family's influences and power increase. The growth of the Habsburg empire was due to the actions taken by each ruler in his time. At the height of their influence they ruled from Eastern Europe to America. Near the end the actions taken by the latter rulers weakened the empire until fighting for more territory they started World War I which completely ended the rule of the Habsburgs. This is a good book to start a study of both European history and the history of Austria and the Habsburgs

Poorly written
This was a very poorly written version in the Captivating History series. I have read other books in the series that were very good. Not this one.

These two books complement each other perfectly!
I finished these two books in one sitting granted that I also didn’t do anything else that day. I recommend keeping notes or a chart to follow the genealogy of the rulers which isn’t very hard since they were listed in chronological order along with the historical events under each of their names.I would also recommend checking out the references at the end of each book for additional reading.

Jumble of facts. Very little context.
Seems it was written by AI. Hard to read, and I was a history major. Do not recommend.
