EGR coolers commonly fail in a way that allows coolant to enter the exhaust stream, emptying the coolant system. Removing the EGR cooler from the cooling system solves this. This is a common misconception that has been spread through the TDI community, the warm up time is marginal at best and you will not notice a difference once you on the road. Will I get a check engine light if I delete my EGR? In most cases the answer is yes. On the BRM and BEW engine the CEL will be triggered, and the only solution to this is to have your ECU tuned. We are working on a plug in adapter for the BEW and BRM engine, this will only eliminate the CEL and is not considered a tune for your ECU, it merely mimics the EGR settings after being plugged in and prevents the CEL from being illuminated. This will be available in 2017. If you're installing an EGR delete on the ALH engine, you can lower the EGR adaptation with VCDS which may or may not help you with keeping the CEL from recurring. However, only abut 40% of all EGR deletes we perform on ALH engines have a CEL after install. The benefits of deleting your EGR system far outweigh the negatives. You should always clean your intake manifold before modifying the EGR system, otherwise you're defeating the purpose.
