Q: Is Hexane used to extract the soy? Is that why they're not Organic? I avoid hexane.

The Soy Curls do not contain hexane as we make them from whole Non-GMO soybeans. Hexane is used to extract oil in some processes. Since we are not extracting the oil we are not using hexane, we just soak the soybeans in pure spring water and cook them. - Sam, Butler Foods www.butlerfoods.com

Q: Is this made out of textured vegetable protein (tvp) or soy protein isolate (spi)? tvp uses hexane to extract the protein and spi does not.

Soy curls are made from whole non GMO soy beans, not TVP or soy isolate. They are not made from refined soy, additive, chemical, preservative free. The manufacturer also makes TVP that is hexane free, made from whole soybeans.

Q: If these are simply soy beans, how do they get their shape? Is something added or are they cooked in oil or how does this work?

The beans are extruded in a machine similar to a spaghetti or cereal maker, under heat and pressure, forced by augur out of a die already cooked. This causes the protein to bind, or texturize, It's a very good product, but I wish it was made with organically grown soy.

Q: Received the 3-pack, the expiration is Dec. 2015, just over 3 months away. For something dried, I expected longer time frame. Is this normal?

I no longer have the packaging as I sort them by size and keep them in canning jars. They're 3½ months old and just fine. However, they're made from the whole soy bean and have all the oil. As such, soy curls can become rancid, so I'm not surprised to hear of a short expiration date. I just received a 6-pack and, after I sort them, I'll freeze them in ziplock bags.
