Q: It will work to cut metal panels?

Absolutely not! This knife will cut midweight carpet at best. What's more, the design is not suitable to cut a rigid material. It will not even cut metal as thin as aluminum flashing--i have tried. It is a good product but it is simply not designed to cut metal.

Q: Will it cut sheet metal ? And how thick?

No this is for fabrics, textiles and paper. Bosch does make a Shear for Sheet Metal which has a reciprocating blade don't know the model number.

Q: Will it cut 3/8 inch Hardi backer board (for tile)?

These are power scissors. They will cut fabric based materials.
