don't know what a thunderbird is, but it does a super job of holding my banjo. cradle brackets are 2.5 inches deep

Can I use it with a mountain dulcimer?

I would say you could use it, but it would be less than optimal. You might even have to lay the dulcimer on its side for the stand to work with it.
