Tough bag! Identical to my old Navy sea bag
We needed a solution for carrying gear through portages in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. So we bought this duffel, some spray silicone for water resistance and used a 42 gallon 3 mil contractor garbage bag for a water proof liner and saved a lot of money when compared to a traditional portage pack or Duluth pack. The design and material are identical to the sea bag Uncle Sam issued me back in '98. I ditched my old Sea bag after getting off active duty because it smelled like beer, training manuals, lost years and regrets...We test loaded this bag with 40+ pounds of gear, soft stuff on the side that touches the person carrying and hard stuff on the other side. The bag seemed to beg for more, so we stuffed it! 60+ pounds of gear and the fabric, stitches, straps, buckles, snap and closure devices held up just fine.In the BWCA we did about 40 miles in the water, about 8 miles of portages, 7 days of camping and our gear stayed perfectly dry! The bag held up just fine and will be used again.* The functional volume of the bag is just about 100 liters +/- (sorry I cannot calculate exactly).* One can of spray silicone is enough to apply two coats to this bag (I did both coats on the exterior side).* One contractor bag approx. 35-50 gallons, between 2.5 and 4 mil thick is enough to line the bag (the little external pocket on the side of the duffel is perfect for spare bags).* .25 cents per liter with water proofing spray silicone and a contractor bag, this can be a HUGE savings over portage packs or Duluth packs.* May not be as ergonomic/balanced as a portage/Duluth pack, but it is identical to what our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines have used for decades. Thanks for reading through. I hope this helps you make an informed decision!~Mahalo

Pew pew
I baught two of these bags in used condition that looked very pristine when they arrived. Good bags. But the smell . Oh my Lord ..terrible. Like rotting, filthy infected feet. I washed both in a very large delicates bag so it wouldn't thrash around violently in the washer with those buckles & that did help take the smell down quite a bit. I'll throw them out to hang in full sun for a few days & they will be fine. I do feel like potential purchasers do need to be aware of this smell tho, as many will find it completely off putting & unacceptable. The quality is there but just be aware.

Just What We Needed
I like that this bag is quite similar to the military issued bags. It was just what we needed.

Disgusting
Complete waste of money. I was aware I needed to wash this as soon as i got it based on previous reviews. I knew I was buying a used item and i was hoping for a little wear and tear. What i didnt know was that it would be disintegrating and even after two washes it would still smell like ass. Im forced to buy the Stansport duffel to travel with instead. Theres no way I want to put my clothes in this nasty thing. I'll be giving it to one of the homeless people down the street. They dont care what they smell like.
