Yes the axle is metal as well. But it is isolated from the wheels so there will not be a short on track.

All the wheels are compatible with HO train only Bachmann train?

The short answer is maybe: not all manufacturers use the same length axle. Kadee, I would assume, uses NMRA standards. Any truck made to NMRA standards should accept the KD wheels. If the KD axle is too long for your plastic truck, there are tools to deepen the bearings in the truck. Northwest Short Line sells wheel sets made with an assortment of axle lengths. If the KDs don't fit, measure the axle of the wheels being replaced and buy the appropriate NWSL axle.

What is the over-all Axel length?

Outside to outside of the axel is 1 inch. Outside wheel to wheel is 13/16ths. Hope this helps.
