Deepen your greens
I need you to know this oil is delicious, with a flavor almost like the green deepness of seaweed. It’s very difficult to explain the distinct taste of perilla without a frame of reference. And most people who haven’t grown up with it won’t have a frame of reference, because a lot of Asian flavors are so distinct and beefsteak/shiso leaf is no exception. It has a deep greenness with a hit of bitterness that manages to add a savory fragrance to everything it touches. It’s extremely fragrant. And very delicious. So far, in my testing, Perilla oil adds a special something to fried rice, stir fry, ramen, and even soups that might benefit from a dashi-type flavor without the salt and smoke of a common bonito or anchovy base. It’s a deep green flavor, but very much a finishing type oil, and this brand in particular has a very clean, lovely, freshness to it. It’s Phenomenal with canned fishes, for real. I like it with canned, smoked American salmons on a sourdough toast. It’s amazing on buldak too, for the record. (One raw egg in the mix with the packets and a little perilla and toasted sesame oil is my go-to.) Please try this, if you’re hesitant and have never dealt with perilla oil. It’s a lovely, bitter, aromatic oil. I’m sure you can find a place for it like I have. It plays well with so many vegetables even if it defies description in a western frame of reference. I hold that if you like arugula or basil I think you’ll like perilla. And the oil is what you expect with that in mind. (I mean: I don’t have a lot of money, so I can only imagine using it for something like a beefsteak, but I think it would turn out beautifully in a marinade. And even if not it has so many other applications that make sense if you can smell and taste it for yourself?) Please, try this. And this one in particular tastes fresh.

The perilla seed oil looked brownish and cloudy, indicating oxidation.
This is my second time buying this oil. The first time, the perilla seed oil looked light yellow, clear, and transparent. However, this time, the oil is noticeably different, appearing brownish and cloudy, which indicates oxidation. I am disappointed. I am considering canceling my subscription, as this perilla seed oil is not reliable.

Hmmmm
My wife and I agreed that it tastes like sesame oil. Almost seems like mixed?? Color is very dark as well, which indicates either low grade perilla oil or sesame oil. It is not dark as a sesame oil, it almost in between sesame and perilla oil. Very disappointed.

Light flavor…delectable taste!
This is much lighter in flavor than a different brand I tried, and much more palatable. It’s not great as is, but add it to a savory dish and it’s delectable! I’m using this for its neurological benefits based on research of tran-cinnamaldehyde and other essential oils used for brain restoration after stroke and concussion. Perilla oil was used in a study as well as cinnamon bark, which pairs well with peppermint or spearmint and has been researched in animal models. When paired with running (anaerobic heart rate), it repairs the endothelial cells that line our vasculature!

Perilla oil, my story.
The taste and appearance are not the same. I’ve purchased this oil from other companies before but a friend recommended this company. I’m disappointed in the quality, it is maybe, diluted. Please decide for yourself.
