Probably not. I would think it would just pull the asphalt pebbles off the shingles.

Q: Can this be used on backerboard for waterproofing a shower niche before thin set and tile is applied?

That doesn't sound like a good application. I recently built a shower and used Redgard. It's super easy to work with and does a great job. It was so easy to use that I applied far more coats than required, just to be safe. It goes on liquid so it fills all space. The blueskin is more of a traditional product. It might work, but I tend toward the newer products. Check out the online videos of waterproofing. All the old guys are using membranes and some even hot-mopping. But, all the young guys, in their 30's and 40's, are using "product" - high-tech engineered products that save time. RedGard is one example of that. I used the Blueskin outside, and it worked, but there was a simpler flashing solution. Inside, I'd never use it. I'd use Redgard.
