a respectful, well written, and comprehensive biography
Elinor Ostrom was a Nobel prize winning political scientist and economist best known for her work on "the commons" - resources that are available to all, and how these often tend to be well managed despite Garrett Hardin's thesis on "the tragedy of the commons." I chose to read this book instead of one of Elinor Ostrom's books because I was interested both in her work and in knowing more about her. Good choice. This book is well written and provides a series of examples of Ostrom's work with commons, including groundwater in Los Angeles, lobsters in Maine, and water in Spain and examines the efforts made by Ostrom to understand why each of these common resources was managed successfully. But it also includes much of interest about Elinor Ostrom herself, her background, teaching philosophy, and priorities in life.A very worthy work on a most remarkable woman.Highly recommended.

Enjoyable and educational look into the life of an amazing person.
Honestly I only had a faint idea of who Elinor Ostrom was before I picked up this book. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about her and the effects of her life's work on how our resources can be managed. This book takes you on a path from forestry management and climate control to cyberspace security. Ostrom's research and development of her principles for managing the commons have a lasting impact on the way we can solve many of our critical issues.I recommend this for anyone who wants to learn more about her life and career. The book is full of fun stories about her journey. The author has done a great job of bringing out her personality through examples of her hard work and determination. Nordman shows the continuing relevancy of her work in our constantly changing society.

This book introduces the reader to Elinor Ostrom's work on defining and sharing the commons
I was impressed with Nordman's research into the life and research of Ostrom and the influence of her work. There are chapters on water resources, lobster harvesting, forest management, climate issues, and space exploration, among others. Each of these chapters gives background information about the issues and shares information Nordman gathered through interviews with people actively engaged with them. I learned a great deal about issues I've been interested in but have never researched. I highly recommend the book for people interested in practical science and those interested in the commons.
