Was skeptical, but this thing is great. Ended up with a complete treadmill desk setup for under $200
I really doubted at first that this product would work. But since treadmill desks are sooo expensive, I figured I give it a try. It has worked great for me. I found a used treadmill on craigslist and paired it with this device to end up with a treadmill desk setup for under $200, which is amazing, compared to $1200-$4000 for a normal treadmill desk setup. The device is designed very cleverly so you can set the tray on it at different angles so it can adjust to a variety of treadmills. Having a treadmill desk is so worth it to me, and this device makes that so affordable. The inventor is very clever and I'm grateful to them. Having a treadmill desk setup has made me feel soo much better. I have a technical job and have to be at the computer all day, which is not good for the body, and all the health studies say will have very bad impact on your health and make you die sooner. With the treadmill desk, I know I'm protecting my health and most importantly, I feel so much better. My body feels energized and awake - none of the tightness and sluggishness that comes from sitting. I already feel more productive doing it, and if you start around 1 mph it is easy to do immediately. Some of the reading online suggested it might take a little while to adapt to working on the treadmill desk, but I found it to be very easy immediately. Do be aware that product is not perfect. First of all, if you are short (I'm 5'4", you have to let it rest lower on the treadmill than it is designed to, and then loop the straps over it again so it holds in place). Also, while it is plenty stable for working, it does attach with straps, so it does have some give and isn't as stable as working on a solid desk. However, for this price and simplicity, it is more than worth it. If you try to DIY a treadmill desk I think you will end up spending more time and money trying to figure out a good setup than it would take for this simple and affordable solution. Recommend it to everyone.

Great product; fantastic customer service
My new SurfShelf works well on my Pro-Form Performance 600 treadmill--though there is a laptop "shelf" on my treadmill itself, the angle of the display is too low (even with the laptop fully opened), and the laptop inadvertently presses console buttons as I run. The SurfShelf fixes these problems. I agree with the other positive reviews regarding functionality, ease of set up, etc. and am only writing to add two things: 1. SurfShelf has some of the BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE I've ever received. I contacted the company using the email listed on Amazon and was contacted, in response, by Randy Fenton, the founder. He went out of his way to answer every one of my questions, sending additional information and measurements that I requested. (I was unsure whether the SurfShelf would work for me, because of the location of an iFit Live port on my treadmill.) Even though a few of my original questions would have been answered had I looked at the company's website, Randy was great about that--answered the question and referred me to the website without making me feel like I was wasting his time by asking something I could have found out for myself. That leads me to my next comment: 2. Look at SurfShelf's website if you have any questions. There are helpful videos there, and you can see how the product is constructed and which types of machines the SurfShelf WON'T fit on. (Maybe would have saved a few other reviewers some frustration.) In sum: the product does the job, and the company's customer service is phenomenal.

I was skeptical but now, I'm a believer. Multitasking at its finest.
Unit tested upon: Schwinn 460 Elliptical Electronics tested: IPad 128 GB and MacBook Pro 13" Assembly I read through all of the directions, and tried both the swivel and fixed methods. The fixed method is more stable but I cannot use the touch screen. The way I have the straps looped on the base, I have the flexibility of both methods. Setup time once you have decided upon which way you'll go will take about 3 minutes for the swivel and about a minute longer going fixed. I don't know about going to the gym to use is since you really need to know how it will mount. The first time will be a learning curve. Once you have the way to secure it, depending upon which machine you're using, a repeat user will have less trouble. Construction This is a two piece polycarbonate construction with clear plastic. There are vents to help the laptop stay cool. I do wish this had rubber bumpers for more stability though. It tends to slide when typing on an elliptical, when you first try it. Once you get the idea how to position it, and type, it gets easier. There are three angles by which this can mount. Depending upon the machine, only one angle really works. Your table or notebook is secured by a Velcro strap. I would prefer if there were rubber backing on this strap to make it slip proof, also. Use When watching a video there is good stability. Typing can be more of a chore but it is definitely workable. Aside from the logistics of attaching this to your exercise machine, you need to accommodate for a power supply unless your device is fully charged for your workout. Trust me, you want to stay charged versus having to use a plug since my set up time did not involve a power supply. The backing does allow me to see my progress on the elliptical while still using a talet. Obviously it will be blocked if using a laptop. For hard core typing or working, it will suffice. For watching a video, it is definitely where this shines. I am currently typing the review on an iPad 4 and it seems to be fine for this purpose. Use of a mouse and keyboard on a notebook is a little tricky but it is still workable. Safety Gould be your first priority when trying this. It may not work for every person based upon height, his/her relationship to the ergonomics of the exercise device and the ability for someone to type and stay balanced, all at once. Now, instead of lounging around and lying down or sitting with the iPad or notebook, you can become less of a couch potato and get something done. Overall I'm happy with my purchase. I wish an update to the design could help inspire more confidence for me with the desk. Two thumbs up. Highly recommend.

It's a $100 hunk of plastic. The straps do not hold it securely in place, it is impossible to keep it tightly bound to the machine. I have a very normal treadmill with handle bars, it's nothing to do with that. It's the design of the desk causing a major imbalance in forces and leaving things very unstable. It's also forced to sit far higher than comfortable for me (I'm short which isn't their fault, but some flexibility would have been nice.) I can engineer it to stay in one place by moving straps around in weird places and adding my own materials but (a) that's a pain to take on and off, I don't want the desk all the time (b) I spent the extremely high price on this item specifically to avoid having to MacGyver something. Oh well. I gave it the extra star because at least it's a big flat piece of plastic that fits a laptop or something?
