While going through the introduction part of the book ,”Keep Sharp” by Dr Sanjay Gupta, I came across the following lines by the author on (P15) - “The only thing I am selling (besides this book) is a way to understand your own brain and make it better”. Initially I thought it to be a commercial line by the author to sell more copies of his book but as I continued my reading ,I could see the genuine urge of a neurosurgeon for the longevity and happiness of all by sharing the knowledge he gained through his research, experience and learning. The ability of the writer to bring out the facts of the brain that he learned as a neurosurgeon and to put them in the form of a book for the readers in a scientific way involving their attention with an interesting narration is no less an asset.Evenththough a few words like amyloid plaques, ginkgo biloba, apoaequorin,ALA,DHA,.leptin etc looked unfamiliar but that didn’t dampen my spirit of reading further and instead led me with interest to read and know more. Perhaps understanding the brains function from an experts point of view involving our overall development might be one reason.Sometimes it’s common for most of us to forget a few things in our daily course of life and we may tend to attribute the same to getting older or relate the memory loss as natural to our aging. But then when we read the line on (P4) that says “Memory loss is not a preordained part of aging”? will pleasantly unburden that false fear of losing memory as we age , a common belief most of us hold. In this regard the conversation of the author with Bill Gates (P223),whose biggest fear is loosing memory echoes the fear that exists in most of us. . ‘Keep Sharp’ is the book that dwells basically about Dementia and Alzheimer’s along with the causes and myths associated with them .Among the many things that the book highlights is the role of a caregiver and the risks involved for them (undoubtedly a fact that can’t be overlooked) and also stresses the need for subtle awareness of us all during the earliest symptoms of dementia in a person which probably starts a decade or two before the disease turns out to be chronic . Identifying such symptoms in advance by the concerned individual or someone closer may help to take the necessary precautions while delaying the onset of Alzheimer’s .Though Alzheimer’s disease may not be treated totally as on today but as said the same can be sufficiently postponed for a longer period which can be well understood going through the book. The story of Kathy Lasky ,a woman in her seventies and who used video games for speed training exercise is quite interesting to read and get inspired to keep ourselves active at any age.In this regard the research that is going on for the correct video games for the treatment of Alzheimer’s is definitely noteworthy. Here, the views of Dr.Adam Gazzaley(P125)) who dreams to see one day doctors prescribing video games approved by Food and Drug Administration rather than pills to turn an aging brain into a younger one - may be viewed with much anticipation and curiosity while simultaneously reflecting the authors confidence and hope leaving us all to look for a breakthrough and hope for a brighter future. Above all the book helps us to learn to be more productive in life, staying fit ,healthy and happy for longer time while making a few life style changes like exercising regularly, managing the weight, following a healthier diet, managing stress, having good sleep and to form many more such simple proactive habits to reach our dream goals.Big take aways like ‘Clean living’ can slash away the risk of Alzheimer’s even for those who are genetically oriented(P14) and the journaling report (P13) which suggests that the person we marry factors greater into our longevity than our genetic inheritance stresses the need for our living styles and focusing on our relationships. An extraordinary book meant for a ‘Healthier Brain’.

Being a second-hand product, this book arrived in excellent condition. No pages were marked or folded over at the corners, and the spine was perfectly straight. As well, Sanjay Gupta is likely the best author I have read regarding health issues. He always stresses that the science behind the health findings is ever changing due in large part to the difficulty in conducting unbiased "experiments." Even so, certain aspects of brain health ring true the more we delve into specific issues. In summary, it's a fantastic read. I plan on implementing all of his suggestions.

I am still reading the book. I am finding it quite fascinating and hopefully will gain so much insight how to better look after my brain or what is left of it!! Highly recommend!
