Q: Can you cut tablet in half for easier swallowing?

Gel caps are made smooth for easy swallowing so you shouldn't have any problems. You can try lubricating them with butter, oil or food (i.e. jam) if you still need help. Gel caps are made with liquid inside a squishy gel-like container. The gel melts within the stomach and releases the liquid nutrients inside. Cutting the gel would mean prematurely releasing the liquid. Another example are the laundry pods that you simply throw into the wash. If you still have problems, take a spoon of food and cut the gel cap directly into the food, making sure the liquid goes into the food and not the spoon. Then quickly swallow the food with the gel cap. Try not to get any of the liquid onto the knife or scissors. The point is that you don't want to waste any of the nutrients, which is measured precisely to match AREDS2 formulation. Even if all the liquid goes into the food, you still risk some of it coating the mouth and esophagus, which may not get absorbed as intended.
