It's not really a 'symbol' but rather a miniature replica of an 18ty century astrolabe. Astrolabes were ancient mechanical calculators (inclinometers) used by scientists, astronomers, navigators, etc. to solve problems relating to time, distance & direction based on the placement of 'heavenly bodies' (sun, moon, stars).
