Writing this review about to finish Yakuza 4. Yakuza 3- is really not great. It shows its age with the wonky walk cycles, very unfun side stuff (which is usually most of the fun!) and just a storyline thats kinda worthless. I can see why this one wasnt brought over for so long, because its really not necessary. Yes theres some decent moments, but overall it felt like a stepping stone. Yakuza 4- Okay, so unless the finale changes my opnion drastically, this one is MUCH better then 3. It still have some of the jankiness, but the story is a lot better and makes up for it. I was apprehensive going into this one, not being able to play our boy Kiryu right from the getgo, but the other main characters are actually relevant and a decent change of pace. They all play different and have interesting techniques. For instance, you can totally tank hits as the Tiger, but if you try that same thing with either the phoenix or the tortoise you are gonna get walloped. The split characters does something similar to Zero in that, each person gets more info and a different perspective on things, and when everything starts colliding, its really enjoyable. The combat in these older ones are definitely some of the weakest points, and again the side stuff isnt really as great as it was with Zero or two in my opinion, but theres some fun stuff, (like a Curry based super hero) Yakuza 5- Havent played it yet, but can update when I do. So for the two Ive played, the remasters are definitely alright. Three feels very weak, and is almost skippable, for four you definitely get your moneys worth. I wouldnt pay full $60 retail for the collection, but maybe $40 is a better idea. You can get that amount of enjoyment out of 4 alone, even if you really dont like three (like I do).
