Make sure batteries are fresh and you charged the car completely. Remote must sync with car to work.

Q: Will it hurt radio controlled car to use without controller - such as pushing around on the floor?

I can't say for sure, but forcing the motor to turn doesn't sound like a good idea. The wheels are not free spinning.
