December 14, 2013 - First Impressions Aesthetics. Previously, I had a fair number of plastic wastebaskets but they were all different shapes, sizes, and colors and so it looked rather tacky, but also I just didn't have enough to accommodate my entire house. I'm still keeping the plastic ones, but putting them in less visible locations and may phase them out in time. Right now, these black mesh bins are the star of the show and I got 9 of them so I'm all coordinated. Sturdiness. The bins are extremely sturdy. It is possible to dent in the mesh if you press against it, but it will only go in a small amount and then spring back once you let go. As for vertical loads, if I flip one over, it's able to support my weight (150 lbs.) without a problem. I know that's not the intended use, but it's just to give you an idea. Mesh Appearance. The mesh is quite fine, as you can see in the photos. I'm not sure how to feel about that as you end up seeing a Moire pattern from a distance. I do like being able to see inside them so that I know when they're getting full. This is an advantage over plastic and opaque bins. I can see where opaque bins might be better to hide the mess if that's a concern for you. I prefer open. Also, and this is a minor detail, you can see about a half inch of overlap of the mesh down the side. However, and this is quite impressive from a manufacturing point of view, the mesh pattern lines up where the overlap is (so the little diamond shapes are aligned with each other). There seems to be a bit of variance from bin to bin, though, so your results may vary as to the overlap, but they all seem pretty close. Mesh Effects. The mesh does have some practical limitations. One is that if you're trying to dump papers out of it, the papers will sometimes get stuck in the mesh (the corner of a paper will get stuck in the mesh). This isn't a huge problem for me and paper is only a small part of my total waste volume, but if you were planning on using this exclusively for paper and think that sort of thing might bug you, it's a consideration. I'm not sure if the answer would be to get a different mesh size or to get something with smooth walls (like a plastic or opaque bin) or maybe a liner. I should also point out that paper doesn't always get stuck, it's just occasionally. The second limitation of the mesh is that, I suppose, if you had really fine granules of something, it might pass through the mesh. I have not had a problem with paperclips, tiny fragments of paper (e.g. from a three-hole punch or even a very fine paper shredder) or anything that I've thrown out, but you probably wouldn't want to use it for ashes or vacuum cleaner dust. Also, I think the general concept of this type of mesh bin is that it's only meant for relatively clean, non-food, office type waste. I use it for plastic water bottles, but I wouldn't put a banana peel in there or cookie crumbs. I have a large plastic kitchen wastebasket for that stuff. Size and Shape. The size and shape are about right for my needs. The bins actually are a tiny bit larger than I expected, but it works out great because it's easy to toss things in. The round shape is also good in my opinion because it requires less fidgeting to get it to look neat (if you're OCD that could be a plus), but admittedly it's just a preference and some may prefer rectangular shapes instead. I think being round, it's more stable and harder to knock over on accident. I also appreciate that they are tapered because if I ever have to move, I plan on stacking them inside of each other. There are three 'legs' on the bottom which are just places where the metal is indented outward ever so slightly. Thus, the metal surface should rest slightly above the surface of the floor by 1/8th of inch or 1/16th of an inch -- it's very slight. On carpet it's irrelevant. On a flat surface it will sit up a tiny bit. There may be a good reason for this such as keeping it out of moisture (preventing oxidation) or stability or maybe it's just a random detail. To be honest I didn't even notice these legs until I did this review and looked carefully. Weight. The weight is good and it's not too light or too heavy. I suppose it may be heavier than plastic bins of the same size, but I think it's fine and adds to the feel of quality and durability. I am slightly reluctant to throw these around the house like I used to do with my plastic bins. I'm not worried about damaging the bins, I'm worried about damaging the house!!! Summary. The aesthetics, sturdiness, and usefulness of the bins are great. I love that they all match and that my house is that much more stylish and organized. I have only had them for a few months so it's an open question how they will hold up in time, but my sense is that metal will hold up well compared to plastic (I've had many plastic bins that crack). I'll update my review if I ever have any problems with them. I am extremely satisfied so far.

Sturdy, bags don't suction to the bin, heavy enough to be stable if bumped (in a house with kids this is important). Use 2 of them for home offices, the other as a bathroom/diaper bin. Fits a standard plastic grocery bag in them, if you are thrifty and like to save on buying extra garbage bags!
