Q: I've got a 3/4 walnut top that's 48" x 48". It's right around 40lbs. Will these work for a top of that size?

I can't say for certain that it will or will not soft-close at that size. But, the weight of the top is not the only factor to consider, the torque is really what needs to be measured. a 40lb top that is only 15" deep has a torsion of 300 in-lbs, but a 48" deep top has a torsion of 960 in-lbs. You could imagine has the same "soft close" hinge would not work for both instances. Unfortunately, this supplier does not provide clear direction on the torsion rating of these hinges, making it hard to determine if they work for any specific application.

Q: Can you use this on a door for upward opening wall cabinet door?

I purchased this gas strut for that exact purpose but have not installed yet. I believe it should assist with the opening of a cabinet door taking some weight away and also with allowing for it to shut slowly without a quick drop.

Hello, These cannot be installed in reverse.

I used these on a very similar sized lid on a “pirate chest” type toy box I built from oak (a heavy wood). I had to add a cross beam further forward because the lid was too heavy to have them all the way back in the intended position. So the box lid does not open all the way. I know you stated “unknown” wood type, but the weight matters alot, especially on a bid lid like that. I bought the 2 hinges with the highest weight rating and they still weren’t sufficient to be placed properly. So definitely try and get a weight on the lid and use that to make your choice.
