Q: I need to return my recent purchase of Voltaren as I can't use it on my sholder, please tell me how

I recently dislocated my shoulder and am awaiting surgery for a torn muscle. The voltaren gel is the only treatment that has given me some relief. The orthopedic surgeon who is doing the surgery recommended this product as an alternative to oral NSAIDS. While the insert states it is not for shoulder pain, that is only because the FDA approval for OTC use did not include studies involving shoulder pain. It does indeed work for shoulder injury and avoids the GI side effects of the oral version.

Per the package insert, Voltaren topical gel ointment is not FDA approved for people under age 18. If your pediatrician has prescribed the pill, Diclofenac, for your child, and it is done, then be aware that different brands come in different strengths. Voltaren has a high rate of heart attack as a complication.
