El Dorado (1966) (BD) [Blu-ray]

I ordered this for my Dad. He withers sees the beginning or the end and never has seen the middle of the movie. He was excited I gave it to him and he could watch it in it’s entirety.

Very good movie, not as good as Rio Bravo, but good in its own way. Duke has one of the best lines “Hey fancy vest!”

Howard Hawks directs a remake of his own Rio Bravo. John Wayne reprises his role from that film, Dean Martin's role is now portrayed by a very capable Robert Mitchum, Arthur Hunnicutt as the old timer and a fairly young James Caan rounds up the law enforcement of 4, taking on the cattle barons. At the time I bought this I opted for the region free US version due to the many extras. 2 commentary tracks, one of them by Peter Bogdanovich (he's always very entertaining), Ride Boldly Ride - A journey to El Dorado, The Artist and the American West, Behind the Gates - A.C. Lyles Remembers John Wayne, and a trailer.Wayne is at his best gruff self, standing up to the lawlessness of the cattle barons cowboys in support of the drunken sheriff, played superbly by Mitchum, who looks more dishevelled than Martin in Rio Bravo. It a cracking western, which has since been released in the UK. I don't know if the US extras is carried over to the UK release; if that is the case, don't hesitate to get it. But if not, and you're a film buff, it's worth getting the US release of this film.

Great cast including a very young James Caan. Predictable but very entertaining

As with many John Wayne western this was very entertaining with a few humorous moments, but mainly action from start to finish.
