Is the shape adjustable?

Yes,You could pull the top connector to make it the shape you want.(Rectangle, Hexagonal, L-shape, etc). You could also make it smaller by removing panels unneeded.

Why is the top connector broken after I pulled it out?

They are locked with each other in case of missing.You can press down or pull out the top connector a little bit to keep the "fix" and "folding“ status.That's to say, do not pull the whole top connector out if not necessary.
