The Study of Language

Was the assigned textbook for a linguistics class. Easy to read. Exercises at the back of every chapter helped a great deal.

I recently bought this book, after having an earlier edition (2nd) of it. The current edition has integrated new scholarship and techniques. You can go as deep as you wish with this book! In addition to the text (20 Chapters) each Chapter has Study Questions, Tasks (to dig deeper), Discussion Topics, and Further Reading. I'm no scholar, but I find myself continually digging into topics in this book. Highly recommended.

This was the first book when I started my undergraduate degree in linguistics. I read it's 4th edition at that time. I liked this book so much that I made the videos on this complete book in English and Urdu/Hindi on my You Tube channel. I would highly recommend that start from this book if you have no background in linguistics

Great book that gave me an insight into linguistics. Recommend to those interested in language and linguistics as introductory topic.

This book is well organized, easy to read, and covers important topics for leading successful teams. While written for research admin teams, the concepts would easily translate to any team. Highly recommend!

The Kindle eBook has an excessive number of lines and boxes, making the task of parsing more challenging, for this reader at least. I am CERTAIN that the text will be useful for the intro linguistics course that I will be teaching -- my university's students and faculty have found it to be both readable and comprehensive. I will be contacting the publisher as this is not a formatting issue I am having with my other eBooks and Kindle texts on the same platform. However, as someone easily distracted by busy formatting, I would have wanted to know this prior to purchase, if I had other options for the text.

This book is great!

The book is detailed but easy to read. It is an excellent text that gives a beginning student of Linguistics an overall and comprehensive understanding of the subject manner.

Un libro fascinante y de gran valor para quienes disfrutan de la lingüística. Explica los conceptos con claridad y logra despertar la curiosidad al mostrar detalles del lenguaje que solemos pasar por alto en la vida diaria. El tema sobre la adquisición del lenguaje en los bebés me pareció especialmente revelador. Ha sido el libro que más he disfrutado a la hora de estudiar, acompañado además por la fortuna de contar con una profesora excelente que hizo la experiencia aún más enriquecedora.

Not the best read to be completely honest. Read the first chapter of it whilst having a poo the other month and it was dreadful. But it did come in handy when we had toilet paper shortages across the u.k.!!!! Even softer than cushelle! Probably not worth it looking at the steep price difference though.

Hab mir das Buch für das Sprachwissenschafts-Studium bestellt. Es bietet kompakten und sehr gut verständlichen Überblick über verschiedene Themenbereiche der Sprachwissenschaften. Nicht abschrecken lassen, weil es auf Englisch ist: Dennoch sehr gut verständlich, da einfaches Englisch, keine komplexen Redewendungen, etc..
