His Namesake is for our Good
In the Names of God, Nathan Stone has a unique background in writing this. Orphaned at a young age, he went to live with a relative that was Jewish and went to Jewish school, later on he moved in with another relative that was Christian. The pages though not conversational, did reasonate a reverance and love for God. He says and I totally agree, that we can only enjoy God to the degree that we know him. Little knowledge translate into little spiritual power or life. He continues to say that learning about God's names and titles offers us a fresh way of encountering God and sensing his presence in our lifes. His name and the meanings point to the God's Lordship in our life and we can receive blessings as we in faith apply the names of God into our lives. We are reminded from the prophet Hosea that it is the lack of knowledge of God that his people perish. The names of God are introduced in the bible and from there we are introduced to yet another name that reflects his character. I would love to have a bible that actually reflects these names. Most of the time it is Lord. His names also reflect his covenant relationship to his people. His sovereignity and his Glory. It seemed to me that each time that God revealed himself to his people, it was to their benefit and to his Glory. That by faith, we can cling to the promises of God. What we gain has his people for our reward and faithfulness lies in our increasing apprehension and possession of the Lord Himself. He is our inheirtance. I was struck in how God revealed himself to Abraham, which we all know the story. How Abraham offered his son has a sacrifice. Each time as a believer, when we act in faith, God reveals himself to us in a mighty way

Excellent book, but needs updating.
Mr. Stone has a sincere respect for God and His personal/descriptive Names in the OT and NT. Since it was written in 1944, much new manuscript information has come to light. For example, the personal Name of God has been found to be Yahweh by most Christian scholars. Jehovah has been determined to be incorrect, being formed by adding the Vowel points of Adonai to the Tetragrammaton, YHWH. This was done to keep from offending the traditionalist Jews who thought it too sacred to pronounce, and even the newest Bible translations use LORD in place of the personal Name of God, YHWH (Yahweh). Since LORD is a title, and not a name, I believe that we should use our God's real personal Name Yahweh in our translations and in our prayers.

Loved it!!
Wow wow wow so many good things to say about this book! I used this in my weekly womenβs bible study and it was pretty popular! We usually do more autobiographical books and this was a refreshing break. The informations is a lot to consider at once so I really appreciated the shorter chapters. I still keep this book near me while Iβm doing personal bible reading for reference. Loved it :)

A worthwhile read
Originally published in 1944, this book was bound to be well written. After all, the author most likely had a manual typewriter at best! The author, Nathan Stone, presents the names of God as they appear chronologically in the Bible. He explains each name based on the setting in which it was first given, adding classic hermaneutic methodologies to build his presentation of each name, which add credence to his research. I use it as an adjunct textbook to a high school course titled "Bible as Literature." It is well done.

Nothing but good
From the beginning to end it covers the names of God thoroughly and at a level anyone can understand. It covers the names in chronological order and they build upon each other, constantly revealing more about who God is. The author has a great background and life story. You can't go wrong with Nathan Stone on OT topics. This book has changed my prayer life and my view of God and His amazing word. I now use the specific names of God when I pray for varying issues. If you are looking for a masters degree level book but like an easy read that is easily understandable then this is your book!!!!!

Absolutely fascinating
I've found this book to be a real gem, it has opened up new insights into the names of God in the bible - particularly fascinating as I haven't studied Hebrew or Greek and because I only read the bible in english I had missed so much detail. Its a little dated in its language, but don't let that put you off at all.
