On the set I purchased, which is different from the one pictured here, the bristles are between 1/4 and 1/2 inch.

Taklon, as it says in the description. "Taklon is made out of thermoplastic polyester — sometimes referred to as PBT, which stands for polybutylene therephthalate — to mimic the characteristics of natural sable. " They are awesome - they've held up really well.
