Gateway to Adventure/Fantasy genre
My 9-year-old, autistic, gifted son loves this series. We loved the Ivan series, so I decided to buy this one and give it a try. He LOVES it and we can't wait for the next installment. I read this to my son each night before bed and explained any vocabulary he didn't know - as well as explained when the vocabulary was a made up creature or concept, lol. This series made me and my son realize that he is super into this adventure/fantasy genre and I couldn't be more excited for him.Applegate's writing does bring up difficult situations, such as death, which some parents may be uncomfortable with. However, it has not had a negative impact on my son and it has spurred some excellent conversations that I may not have otherwise had the opportunity to have with him while he is still young enough to be influenced by his parents over his peers.

The Quest Deepens
Anytime there is a book with a quest, I'm in. (I re-read The Hobbit once in a while!) Yes, I finished this one and now how long might be the wait for the next adventure for brave, growing-up and now adventurous Byx and her companions, humans Khara and Renzo, catlike felivet Gambler, and the small and mighty Tobble? They have continued their journey to find the traveling island of Tarok, hoping to find more dairnes, saving Byx from being the last one of her species. The plot expands into political strife and danger in the land with the reigning dictator, the Murdano, gearing up to fight the other vicious Kazar Sg’drit, enslaving species to build his army. Connections to today's political challenges including war, prejudices of 'other', and human trafficking may go unnoticed by children, but not by adult readers. Khara is rising as a leader in the coming war and her companions, including Byx, will face the battle with her. Now we must wait for number three! Katherine Applegate's imagined world in this series is extraordinary!

Bought as a gift
My second- grade son received "Endling: The Last" as a gift because we loved reading "The One and Only" books together. He had me read "Ivan" twice out loud, and he read it himself while in first grade.Though I struggled pronouncing words, he loves reading these out loud as well! I think that once I finish the third, I'll have to read them again. Parts of this book are so vividly descriptive and awesome that I had to read them to his mother as soon as she returned back from work.Ms. Applegate is a very wonderful story teller!

Beautiful beginning, unsatisfying ending
This story was a true beauty. There were times where I couldn’t stop reading and continued page after page. It was heartening to see Byx learn her self-worth. To see weak characters show their strengths and strong character show their weaknesses. The only thing that I would change about this book is the pacing. Every major event that happened seemed to end as soon as it started going. The author has a brilliant idea, but it seemed that she tried to cram too many major events in too few chapters. Luckily, this only seemed to happen in towards the end and not the beginning. Besides that, this book was a masterpiece

Brilliant epic fantasy!
I absolutely adored the first book, Endling: The Last, and could not wait to preorder the sequel. I love Byx’s story, and the second book is just as amazing, if not better. We get to see Byx really grow and become a leader through these next adventures, which are just as dangerous and thrilling. I always enjoy the second book in a series because we get to know the main characters so much more deeply. I was sad to see the ending of the book. It was hard to put down, and I hope many other readers (kids and adults) enjoy it as much as I did!

A must read if you have read the 1st volumne.
An interesting and enjoyable story, but you should read the first of the series: The Endling, The last. By reading the first book brings a better understanding of this book. Really like the characters. Interesting fantasy novels. I read the first novel by happenstance: saw it amongst other books at a wholesale store. Didn't realize it was for older children and young adults: I'm in my 70s. I like using my imagination so it was enjoyable. Hope whoever reads these 2 books do too.
