Absolutely brilliant compilation of old photographs of Indian royalty. Excellent essays as well. I was amazed by the stories of maharajas who kept court photographers to document official and personal moments. One of the most special aspects of the book, which is full of large, gorgeous photographs, is seeing how palace artists often painted over the black and white photography to make it extremely Indian.The photos of children, men, women--and a lot of dead animals--are absolutely superb.
