I have a daughter who has developed a soy allergy over the past year. One of the things she enjoys (as we all do) is a family recipe for chocolate cake with chocolate fudge frosting. The frosting calls for 4tbs of shortening, and is brought to a boil and then cooled in an ice-water bath. So I was looking for something with a melting point very similar to Crisco in order for the solidification to work properly. This product fits the bill nicely. An added benefit is that the taste is vastly better with the absence of an oily taste from the soybean oil. In fact, it is VERY reminiscent of pre-1980's Crisco before the heavy use of Soybean oil to make the product cheaper. After using this, I don't think I'll ever go back! I highly recommend it.

This shortening tastes great in baked goods. I appreciate that the ingredients are organic. The shortening is creamy and easy to measure. I just spoon it and press it in to a measuring cup. The container is a good size and lasts for a long time, without spoiling. It works well in all of my dishes. The container is sturdy, with no leakage. You can also use it when greasing and flouring a pan.

Love having an alternative to crisco that we've always used for pies. Works the same, tastes great, healthier for you!

I like that this shortning doesn't contain any soy. The shortning works as well as name brand shortnings in that the baked goods have a great consitency with the bonus of a clean taste. As regular shortning is a step above lard in taste and the lightness of baked goods, Spectrum Naturals is a step above regular shortning and works for thoses who cannot tolerate Soy.

The product itself is wonderful. I love that I can use shortening when I need to, such as a half and half with butter in cookies, in frostings, and so on, but not have all the icky overly processed crap that comes with it. The flavor of this is neutral and it works well for all sorts of culinary purposes. I took off a star for VitaCost's packing of this. I ordered two containers of this. When they arrived, the box was damp. The two containers were in the box with no protection or way to keep them from bouncing around during shipping. As a result, one of the containers had split down the sides and leaked everywhere. I have contacted Amazon, who said they would contact the seller. I am still waiting for either a replacement or refund.

Palm oil has gotten very bad rap from the media and medics. We know much more about healthy fats and this is one. It lends a velvety texture to sauteed mushrooms, for example. When butter is a no go, this is the perfect go to. I also keep it on hand in my disaster hoard as it lasts, is neutral and adds a good source of fat calories that are healthy (unlike seed oils and hydrogenated fats.)

I live in a small town, and while our grocery store is well stocked, some of the prices are unapproachable. I prefer this shortening over the more known brand for making tortillas, and pie crusts.
