Great entry level Audio Generator
Needed an audio generator that was simple to operate for doing speaker testing. This unit handles the task well.

Value AF Signal Generator
"Value" because this generator represents a good value for the amount paid. Dial calibration for frequency output desired is very close to actual output frequency. All-in-all, a very good value for the money paid! One thing - don't use it in a circuit near, or connected, to a switching power supply (such as those used for laptops or other such items). Those power supplies can generate a large amount of electronic "hash" which can bleed into the generator circuit.

Some Re-assembly Required
This equipment is described as an audio generator, but in fact its frequency range far exceeds the audio spectrum (1mHz). Mechanically it had a problem that could only be resolved by opening the unit and going inside. (There is a LOT of empty space for such a large case.) The problem I encountered was the misalignment of the reduction gears from the front dial to the tuning capacitor. This made it difficult to turn the knob and set the frequency. A larger gear is attached to the frequency knob which then engages a smaller gear attached to a variable air capacitor. The variable capacitor is mounted on a metal plate that has adjustable slots so that the 2 gears can be adjusted relative to each other. When I examined my unit the gears were adjusted so close together that they were no longer coplanar, i.e. one gear was engaging the other gear at an angle. Easy enough to fix by readjusting the capacitor mounting screws, but this should have been corrected before the unit was shipped. I thought that the days of self-assembly and calibration ended with Heathkit.Electrically, the unit’s frequency dial does not track well when checked against a counter. If you adjust the end band frequencies for accurate readings, then all the frequencies in between will be off. You can do much better for the $78 asking price.

Its ok i guess
For the price and what it does, it works well for what I need. As a tone gen its fine but I wont rely much on the wave output to scope out freq problems. I like the old style dial as I can get to the freq i need quick. The low and small price units made today (digital) have small screens and slow to select the freq you want so that's why I bought this one.. Will I buy again ? I sure hope not,,, as cheap built as this one is I only hope it lasts.

What's hot and what's not.
Built solid over all. Output test lead lacks though... pulled rubber strain relief back and the shield was not crimped or soldered to the connector which caused intermittent connection, easy fix though.. plastic facing coming away from the chassis behind the dial, possibly remove and re-glue.. but over all performance-awesome!! very happy!!

Entry level
Working good, cheap price cheap built! Front fascia coming away had to re-glue it. Mechanical dial very stiff. Wave output is clean. Overall: Good tone gen for the price but be aware to do some small fix like in the others reviews.
