Q: What is the volume control like ? My husband is very deaf and has great difficulty in hearing anyone on the telephone.

On its maximum setting it is very loud - especially the Base Station.

Q: Please check line cord , will not disappear. checked and line ok .disappointed as i really like this phone. presume faulty .is this common issue.?

This is normal on setup. Please read the simple setup section in the handbook supplied.

Q: Are our old bt4500 additional handsets compatible with a new bt4600 base unit?

Yes, but to sync phonebook, you need to register 4600 phone to 4500 base. doing it the other way round will result in a blank phonebook

yes it does have speed dial and it is very good
