Can this still be used with the battery cover missing?

Kind of. It will work, but the battery could slip down and loose contact.

Is it compatible with the 10.8 volt makita li-on bateries?

Yes, thats what I use in the light

This will also use the 7.2v li-ion battery right?

The only battery I know that you can use is BL1013 & BL1014 which is a 10.8 volt , 3.5Ah.
