This book made me stronger. The descriptions of various important in our history were very well described. I am using this book to teach a class to my grands, cousins and church Sunday school youth. They need to know how we got here and why our struggle continues. It is also note worthy to mention how racism continues and it reversed from the previous help from the Republican party to the new Republican racist and oppressive party it now represents. Neither party is what they once were but one has risen to be inclusive while the other has become a symbol of hate. We rose before because our God is the God of the oppressed. We shall rise above this hate and suppressive regime. We cannot forget police brutality was utilized to maintain racist laws and policies and that continues even today. Deborah Springer Suttlar

While I'm not entirely sold on captivating, this is an interesting chronological history of African Americans. It starts with the early days of slavery and proceeds through to the Civil Rights Movement. While it references more current events, they're not as thoroughly covered.Each section shows a few paragraphs of history, whether it be people, laws, or events. It's a nice way to see what facets of history you'd like to learn more about, while still teaching some new (sometimes disturbing) information. We've come a long way, but still have a long way to go.An example of the writing:"Even in the Northern States, African Americans did not enjoy the same rights and privileges of their white counterparts. Northerners believed that no human should be owned, but they did not believe in an inherent equality, as was obvious by the way they treated other races and women. Though people focus on the inequality within Southern States, there was just as much inequality in the Northern States; it was simply more likely the codes and laws were unspoken. In recent history, some of the most racist laws have been enacted in Northern States, perhaps because only Southern States have been under adequate federal scrutiny. However, there is little doubt the majority of racist laws and statutes on the books (even if only in the past) were written and enforced in Southern States starting soon after the end of the Civil War."

This book is an easy read and its accurate facts are well documented.

I learn alot
