THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL VOL. 1: SQUIRREL POWER (Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, 1)

The Super Power of Listening
Squirrel Girl or Furry Woodland Creature Lady (not!) is my new favorite Superhero and villain counselor. She, alias Doreen Green, will try to find out why the villain is doing what they're doing and see if she can't help them reach a solution. Of course the villains aren't always willing to share their pain or even know what it is they actually want beneath their overt desire which leads to criminal activity. This is such a refreshing take for a Superhero. The comic is filled with humor, inventiveness and when necessary a good thwacking. It can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.I discovered Squirrel Girl at the library but had to buy the first issue since it was missing. Of course some ne'er do well took it. My suspicion falls on Deadpool.Squirrel Girl is not the first squirrel superhero I've met. In the yard of my parent's secret lair, in a secret part of the pacific northwest in a secret country, (there are other countries beside the US that have a pacific northwest) is a black squirrel (grey squirrel with recessive black hair genes) named Hurl-Squirrel. When she finds garbage in the forest she picks it up and hurls it into someone's lawn so that it will get thrown away. Rubber tires are a challenge for Hurl-Squirrel so if you could dispose of them properly instead of dropping them in the woods, she would appreciate it.

I love the medium of comics
I love the medium of comics, but I've never "followed" any particular superhero comics. It's such a commitment unless you can find a consciously self-contained arc of, say, a year or less that doesn't cross over too much. And let's be honest: a more complex universe doesn't guarantee great stories (Even if that is what makes comics a "hobby" level interest). So I've typically opted for self-contained graphic novels or lighter all-ages series.Squirrel Girl is perfect for me. It sets a less complicated, more fun series against the organization and greater scale of the general Marvel universe. "Action" seems kind of a loaded term, but I'd say it does it without sacrificing action.North, Henderson and the others on this team have put all the care into these stories that you hope a great comic will have. The characters have heart and truly positive values and traits. The characters from "heavier" Marvel titles are handled in a fun way without betraying who they "really" are. There's little rarer than a spoof where nobody looks dumb, but they've accomplished it here and made it look easy. This title is almost literally nothing but fun.So far I've read these four issues, and about five other later issues. Squirrel Girl started out as a side throwaway character in a short Iron Man story (included in this volume) as a spoof of theme superheroes. She came back as part of the Great Lakes Avengers, which I really did not care for, and has popped up occasionally elsewhere in the Marvel universe. I came to the series through Ryan North's other projects. In this team's hands this may be my favorite superhero in comics.

Say hi to Tippy Toe!
Doreen Green is the incomparable superhero known as Squirrel Girl and, as the name of this book spells out, she is simply Unbeatable. That's true in a plot sense. If evil comes up against Squirrel Girl, it doesn't stand a chance. Marvel villains from all walks of life, including some of the most dangerous the world has ever known, fall before her. Which, in some other cases, might be a drawback. Knowing, going into it, that Squirrel Girl will win. But it's not the destination, it's the journey. HOW does Squirrel Girl win with a power set that would be considered laughable? She always finds a way and that's where the entertainment lies. But it's true in a literal sense too. From an enjoyment standpoint, you really couldn't ask for more than this. Squirrel Girl is hilarious. Her friends? Hilarious. Her foes? Even more hilarious. This is a book that knows exactly what it is and makes no apologies for it. It just goes out to be the best darn book it can and, you know what? It's Unbeatable.Sadly, this particular volume feels very short to me. This run of Squirrel Girl was 8 issues and I really think they should have been able to package the entire thing into a single volume. They do a great job of adding bonus material, but still I'm forced to take a star away. But that's a minor nit-pick and I think anyone would be pleased to give this book a try.

A good addition to your collection
I got ahold of the $1 addition of the first issue of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and it sold me on going out and buying the first volume. One of the great things about this comic is that she doesn’t just go around hitting things. She thinks about the villains motivations and takes that into account when fighting. With fantastic results. Plus she abounds with confidence. She has no doubts in her abilities and does her best regardless of the situation. She also has a clear sense of right and wrong and acts on it.The art style in this comic isn’t the one we have grown to know in most other Marvel offerings. It is much more cartoony looking. Personally, I feel this look fits the personality and feeds into the tone of the comic. In this volume she faces off against a variety of opponents: Kraven the Hunter, Whiplash and Galactus.I love the little touches in this volume: the twitter conversations are funny and the text underneath the bottoms cells adds a nice little touch. The tone of the comic is pretty light. And given some comics tendency toward being gritty that was a relief.I think this comic is most assuredly worth a look see. And I will be getting my hands on the second volume when it comes out.

Very good book
I loved this book and will no doubt read it again. My granddaughter likes it too, but her school has a copy of it so she'd already read it.

What a joyful fun read!
Love love Squirrel Girl as a character, so I was kicking myself for not picking this up sooner - what an absolute delight!I'm a big fan of Ryan North's work from Dinosaur Comics to the run he had with Adventure Time, so I was nearly guaranteed to enjoy myself in all honesty.

Best Comicbook ever

The Most Unbeatable Comic
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is the best comic around. This particular issue isn’t the best on but still one of my faves. The only confusing thing in it is when we read Doreen and Nancy’s text messages and see this ‘this is my phone number o_o’. Why o_o?! Anyway all in all I love it.
