The Lost Art of Reading Nature’s Signs: Use Outdoor Clues to Find Your Way, Predict the Weather, Locate Water, Track Animals―and Other Forgotten Skills (Natural Navigation) Review: Maybe the Greatest Book on the Outdoors You'll Ever Read - I originally got this book out of the library, but it was so good and was packed with so much information that I bought a copy. In it he describes all kinds of fascinating clues you can observe in the world around you (both in nature and in towns) that lead to interesting deductions. He describes how to find North based on all kinds of different plants, how to understand animal and human footprints, how to read the stars, how to easily calculate the phase of the moon at any future or past date, how to understand development patterns in a city, and on and on. Tristan clearly has gotten plenty of 'dirt time' to refine his observations - this isn't an armchair guy who has just brought together a lot of ideas originally developed by other people. This book has transformed the way I view the world while out in nature. Review: Great book! - Very informative book, along with pictures and illustrations.

Amazing 👏
Absolutely love this book and the author tristan. He is a very good teacher with loads of intriguing knowledge. I view many things differently in life because of his earthy teachings. If you're eager to learn and have a love for our beautiful earth and/or travel in any sense. You will learn so much and enjoy his books. This book is very detailed including many photos with directions. He put alot into making it as if you're in a class room. It has a very soft paper back cover and it's full of 383 pages as well as an additional section for an index to help you.

Interesting facts
Interesting reading, but a little long-winded in spots. Author's style seems to toggle between a resource guide and a novel. But if you can get thru it you're bound to learn something new.

Favorite nature book
Completely blown away buy this book. First, the cover is beautiful! Qhen it came in i was a tiny bit disappointed because it was not as beautiful inside as it was on the cover and it was much thicker than i had expected. I had intended to have my children read it during family reading hr but after seeing the thickness i felt like it may discourage young readers. So my husband began reading it and after reading only a chapter he made us all sit down to listen. Its well written and the words and good info makes up for the lack of color on the pages. The kids have each picked it up at different points and flipped through to a chapter about something they are wondering about. My son read about trees one day and my daughter read about lighting strikes on a day we where seeing lots of lighting. They use it kinda like a reference when they come across something in nature they dont know or understand. My husband and i are both reading it in order and have read out loud to the kids when we come to a section we find really interesting. This book makes you want to go outside and look for the signs you learn. I can no longer drive down the road without looking for the "wedge effect" on a tree line not to mention various other things that make even a short outing seem like a bit of a scavenger hunt. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves learning.

Learned a lot
I enjpy being in the woods, along the rocky coast, sandy beaches and mountains that are the state of Maine where I am blessed to call home. I loved this book. I took away something in each chapter and for once I didn't feel odd for looking ag the world as I do. I have often seen things many peers didn't and this book felt like finding a piece of a club I belonged to. My son enjoyed the information of tracking and clouds. I loved learning more ablut lichens, I have always enjoyed them. This book offers something for everyone that would like to unlearn the disconnect we have frkmoir natural world and tap back into what we were once greatly in tune to.

Maybe another coffee table book...
So far, I've not really learned much from this book and I've read a few chapters. I do love the author's writing style. It keeps me engaged and entertained, which is why I keep trying to read it. But 3 chapters in, I have not really learned much that isn't common sense. I did learn a couple of things about a mud puddle that I hadn't paid attention to before. The reason I gave 3 stars is because there's a lot of "fluff" in the book. It's still entertaining, but I bought the book to LEARN, not be entertained. I don't have time to read much, so what I have read so far hasn't taught me as much as I would have hoped. It seems to me to just be another coffee table book, which is not what I wanted. Maybe I'll learn much more, further into it. Update: This book is not engaging enough to make me want to find time to read it so I haven't finished it.

Well, it's not bad, but it's just not interesting, considering how exciting can the subject matter be... The narrative is very choppy, and hard to follow - it's like a recording of an old guy telling everything he learned over the years in one 10 hour session non-stop. There are interesting bits and pieces, but at some point you just stop caring and zone out. The way it's organized makes it very hard to find anything, so doesn't work as a reference book either. Lack of vivid colour illustrations in a book which talks a lot about noticing things in nature is counterproductive... Really wanted to like it, but it's just not that good. Would be way better with quarter of information, but better organized and illustrated.

It is very interesting and explains things that are all around us yet, we fail to read them effectively or properly. It has started some excellent conversations at our dinner table. If you spend even minimal time outside, this is a great book to learn about what is around you.

COMPRE 2, UNA SIRVIO Y LA OTRA NO, NUNCA PUDE DEVOLVERLAS PUES EL TERMINO PARA HACERLO ES MUY CORTO, LA CAMARA LLEGO Y SOLO TUVE 1 MES PARA PROBAR Y COMO NO ESTABA EN EL PAIS CUANDO LAS PROBE YA NO HUBO OCASION DE DEVOLVER UNA DE ELLAS. NUNCA FUNCIONO. LA OTRA SI PERO NUNCA PUDE PONER EL RELOJ. NO ES AMIGABLE.

How did anyone get this observant and develop such amazing deductive powers about the natural world...? This book is a must-have for nature lovers. OK, few (b&w) photos and not that many line drawings either. But the wealth of info contained inside is mind-blowing. You will never look at nature the same way again. Be warned though, some of his other books, Kindle and hard copies, seem taken from this so watch for long repeat sections. Nice to have it all in one place as hard copy though, just in case of Armageddon, in which case a great addition is the Dorling Kindersley Survival Handbook by Colin Towell, also on the ever-resourceful Amazon... And no, I'm not a seller just a very happy customer.😀 Edit: meantime bought a second copy as a gift, so impressed by this book and determined never to let go of my own copy!

Es ist selten, dass man so ein interessantes Buch mit so vielen praktischen Informationen über Natur findet. Ich fühle mich jetzt viel selbstsicher in der Natur.
