English only.
buyers be aware: this book is English only. Just in case you were like me, who borrowed the book in both English and Chinese from the library, loved it so much that you want a copy of your own. Well, this is not it. Still gave it five stars since it’s no fault of the seller and still a nice book. Just not one that I was hoping for...will probably donate..

it's a children's version.
this is a nice book. i was hoping for something more adult. the art is not great. but i't not bad either. i think it's a good quick telling of the tale of the monkey king. he doesn't come out in a real good light. he's an arogant brat that is impatiant and tries to push around those that he can. he'll take a simple job and steal everything for himself.if i were going to read this to a child i would need to make notes on a number of areas. without those notes one might miss explaining why the monkey king was bad, selfish, irresponsible, and not to be immulated.

Good children's version of the Monkey King
Growing up, I loved the Monkey King stories and would like my children to share that too. I have bought a couple of books, but this is by far the best. My kids are all interested in modern day superheroes, and this is a good retelling of a classic naughty to good superhero! This book honors the original story and adapted it well for children. I highly recommends it!

Good kids version
I checked this book out from my local library and read it to my 6 year old son. He was born in China and loves Monkey King stories. I liked this version because it was easy for him to understand. I also appreciated the fact the art work did not delve into the war. There was no blood or overly violent pictures. As the other reviewer mentioned the Monkey King is selfish, arrogant, disrespectful, and he has many other bad traits. I like the fact that this book brings those poor qualities out for discussion with my son. He loved the book and I liked the mildness of this version for a young reader.

the very best retelling for children
This is a beautiful retlelling for children of Journey to the West, by Wu Cheng'en, originally written for adults. Written around 1572, during the Ming Dynasty, "Journey to the West" is one of the four great classical novels of China. More information can be found at Wikipedia. In this retelling there is less violence. The book is printed on excellent quality paper and the water color illustrations are colorful and very beautiful.
