Bound & Determined: A Visual History of Corsets, 1850-1960 (Dover Fashion and Costumes)

I'm very disappointed with this book and would return it if I could. I didn't expect a lot of great detail from a Dover Publication (they're mostly pictures with no footnotes/annotations about where they're from), but this title was very misleading. There was one illustration of Regency stays, one of 1840s corsets, and maybe a few pages for the entire 1850-1880 range.As someone doing research on 1870s and earlier this was a bummer of a book. Basically this author loves and has written other books about the 1890s so that is where she put the majority of her work. Do not buy this book for researching anything but the last decade of the 19th and the early 20th centuries.

Bound and Determined is an anthology of black-and white drawings and photos (some badly in need of editing) of corsets and girdles, mostly from the 1850s through the 1950s. Some are dated and attributed in captions to their original sources; some are not, and there is no bibliography. There is no real attempt to cover (let alone analyze) the full range of corset types for any period. The four-page introduction (which comprises almost all the text) adds little. Along with the book's misleadingly suggestive title, it makes me long for just one corset book that doesn't include *any* of the coy eroticism authors think necessary to sell this subject. In short, don't look for academic, technical, or how-to information here. If you just want some corset and girdle photos, and don't want to personally investigate vintage fashion magazines or catalogs, this little book does well enough.

This was an excellent visual book for historians. Amazing pics. Exactly what I was looking for!!! This is a must for those interested in corsets of yesteryear.

Very interesting, all the old ads for underwear.Just wish now after reading it had continued to the 1980's.

Ce livre retrace l'évolution du corset à partir des publicités de l'époque. Bien fait, il est très bien pour compléter une collection sur le sujet mais ne se suffit pas à lui même.
