This seems rather pricey for a piece of plexiglass with holes drilled into it. What am I missing?

Your question and the seller's response made me wonder, so I looked into it briefly. Using Tap Plastics as a reference, the base material is $35, assuming no waste on the sides. Then add in shipping or gas + time. Next is manufacturing. I'd laser cut most of it, though you are talking about a special lens on many lower cost lasers for >1/4" to get the focal length for a decent cut. For the pocket to hold the inserts you could do that with careful calculation for your laser setup, or it could be done with a CNC machine. I'm not sure about the insert manufacturing - it could possibly be a laser job as well or purchased separately, but the raw cost probably isn't too high a few bucks. Now add in the time to manufacture, assemble packaging, label, and ship, as well the cost of damaged pieces or missing shipments. Finally you can add the channel (e.g. Amazon) costs and margin. While he may have a discount price for acrylic, I still doubt it's much of a money maker.

I can't tell from the official pictures, but user pictures seem to show a ledge that keeps items from falling off. Does this tray have a ledge?

The slope makes it easier to use and my computer does not slide at all. Books that I’m reading do slide however (I imagine since they weigh less and don’t have a grip). I just use a clip at then bottom to keep it from sliding and keep the page open.
