Landing Leathers Men Navy G-1 Leather Flight Bomber Jacket (Also available in Big & Tall)

While I'm giving this jacket 5 stars there are a few things to be aware of. First, it is cut very different from my Cooper G-1, which was a perfect match for the Navy issued G-1 I had in the service in the 60's. The original G-1 was cut straight and slim. This one has a full cut like a civilian jacket. I'm not "straight and slim" any longer so this version fits me quite nicely. The original G-1 had an unisulated nylon lining. This version has an insulated cotton (?) lining and is very warm. Warm enough that it needs to be pretty chilly before it won't be uncomfortably warm to wear. Like below 50 degrees. The overall weight of this jacket is slightly heavier than the original G-1's, but the leather doesn't feel as thick or as sturdy. The original G-1 did NOT have side entry pockets. Neither does my Cooper. The pockets on this verion are side entry and the external pocket sise IS correct. That does place the entries pretty far around the sides. Changing the patch pockets to be smaller so the side entries could be more towards the front would make them obviously too small. The orignal G-1 and Cooper have a snap closure inside map pocket on the left. The pocket measures about 7-1/4 high and is deep enough and sturdy enough to hold a .45 auto pistol. This version's map pocket is only 6-1/2 insches high and not nearly deep enough or sturdy enough for something like a full size .45 auto. My Cooper is a 46R which translates to an XL I believe. I ordered this one in an L. It fit my 5'7" 210 lb self perfectly. This jacket is not goatskin and it's too soon to tell how well it will hold up compared to the original G-1's. On the other hand I paid over $300 for my Cooper 15 years ago and this version cost me a fraction of that. The fur collar is synthetic instead of mouton like the original and lighter weight. Bottom line is that this jacket is not historically accurate if that's important to you. But it is comfortable, warm, looks good and someone really has to know from owning an original government issue G-1 from the day that this version isn't historically accurate.

Actually I'm very happy with the purchase! I did order the jacket 2 XL-tall and the fit is fine, just a bit large but I'm glad for that should I want to wear a sweater under it, but so far that hasn't been necessary as it is very warm even with the current (12/2016) cold spell in our area and temps down in the +10 degree range in the mornings. I love the brown color and lining finish. There are the two large front pockets as in the product photos with smaller hand pockets behind the large pockets and one deep inside pocket, on the left side and built into the leather and before the liner. OK, so I do have one gripe, again just because it's new, the button holes on the pockets are really stiff and tight getting the buttons opened or closed on the two front pockets. The very soft "fur" collar is NOT removable but has a way to close it around you neck with a flap of leather and smaller buttons, and Included are a few new buttons of both sizes. The zipper is a YKK antiqued looking metal, well made and works fine. There is a sewn flap on the right side that protects the clothes from being zipped up when closing the jacket around your stomach area. I read a few complaints about the leather being somewhat stiff. Since it is still new it is just a bit but not very stiff as you might think unable to move with it on. When I'm wearing it I notice it most when driving my pickup truck and the back and the collar gets pushed up. Overall the jacket is not stiff to the point of being a problem at all, and I don't think it will be long to break in. Also, mentioned in other reviews, conditioners will help as this is not my first leather jacket. Again, overall I am very happy with this purchase. I think the jacket is very well made and a bargain considering all the three to five hundred dollar leather jackets out there.
