Its okay. Perhaps a more gifted strobist could make better use of this than I am able to.
I am always looking for light modifyers for my Canon Speedlites. I purchased this prior to a wedding I was photographing where I knew I would be taking a lot of portrait shots. I ended up not using it mainly because it took up too much space in my camera bag and was kind of cumbersome. Nevertheless I didn't want to return it although looking back, I probably should have....I used it finally yesterday for the first time. Its okay, but you see that inside disk that covers the flash head? The diffuser comes with three of them in different colors and they are secured in place with a screw and cap (see the product shot). Here's where my problem comes in.... no matter how much I tightened that screw cap, there was still quite a bit of play in the disk. It swung from side to side which means if I turned my camera to vertical the disk would swing and not be fully covering the flash head. So, all in all its not a bad modifyer but it probably wont see a lot of use here. I am, however, not a gifted strobist so perhaps someone more talented than myself with a speedlite will have much great success with this.BOTTOM LINE: A good tool for your speedlite but not the best I've tried and its size makes it less portable than would be ideal.

Great if you only use wide angles, does not work properly with Canon ETTL
The quality of the light is great. Let's begin there. Excellent. I settled on the regular white disk, the gold one being too warm for me. The shadows are great. Now for the bad part... using ETTL on my Canon 430 IIe, the beauty dish severely under exposes anything over 28 mm using my 24-105 Canon F4 lens. Utterly and completely underexposes by about 2 or 3 stops.I'm planning to use it at events, where I mainly shoot at 24 - 28mm, but it is certainly a bummer. On the ocassions when I would like to mount it on a separate stand and use a trigger, yes, I'll do it in manual.Except for the annoying not working in zoom, great addition to my light fixtures. As an addition tonight: Using the remote on the Canon (not wireless, it works off the built in flash, but the built-in flash doesn't fire unless you want to) I was able to make it work while using the zoom. I guess I will be using the beauty dish on the flash mounted on a bracket.

The way it softens the light is very nice. I may end up spray painting one reflector ...
Well honestly I have not had enough shooting experience with it yet. I have only shot with the silver reflector it did give me significant color shift as fill flash in the shade. A noticable green tint. The way it softens the light is very nice. I may end up spray painting one reflector white. I need more time to shoot with it though. I do think this item is worth purchasing at its current price.EDIT 8-27-2014 Well I think I had the center reflector turned backwards. Not noticing the green like it was turned the other way. Still need more shooting with this modifier will update when I get more shots with it... one really nice feature of this modifier is that they have color gels for it. Awesome.EDIT 9-4-14 Really am liking this little modifier. Very awesome for the price. Just got the color gels and it also came with 3 aluminum honeycomb grids... how cool is that. For the money its a deal you can't beat. Competitive products like the fong unit would cost triple this amount with the gels and grids that I just got. Recommend DO PURCHASE. So many companies break it off in our *** on these modifiers... very fair price on this.

more experimenting needed
i used this with my canon 50/30D. it did not come with directions, so I copy what i saw on the box. my first use was indoors for a car show. With auto setting and 580EXII flash, the picture was good. It is for up-close portraits, because the lower portion of the picture is a bit dark. I then use manual settings, and the pictures had a hot spot. I need more shots. this diffuser comes with 3 reflector...I used the silver one. I did not try the the golden one yet. I think with more use, i should get better pictures. But it is for close ups. I already use a 22 inch beauty dish, but I wanted this because it fits over the flash. I will see what the next set of pictures look like.

My favorite purchase!
Read the whole review. This is one of my favorite pieces of gear that I ever bought. The important thing to note is that I LOVE this beauty dish in combination with the grid set and the diffusers which are sold separately. Get both. Also. You should know that it's heavy-ish. I wrap electrical tape on my speed-lite so that I can change the angle of the camera without the flash flopping over. The light is nice. I used this with an opaque diffuser and 1/16 grid. I tried it on my dog from 3 feet away and full flash and it didn't have any of the bad elements of flash. With the same rig, I also force flashed a few pictures of my son from 15 - 20 feet on a sunny day. The combined rig also created a nice result.By itself, the beauty dish isn't very different from a speed lite but in combination with the accessories it is fan-freakin-tastic!

Not bad for an on-camera flash
The dish itself is not plug and play. I think I still have a few things to learn about using it. I put it on my camera and took a picture or two before I realized that the inner mirror was on backwards. I got better results when I put the concave side facing forward. I think that the convex side was facing out when I opened the box. I could still be wrong about this point, but the skin tones on my photo subject looked nicer with concave forward.A larger beauty dish will probably get better results, but for on top of the camera, I think this was a good purchase. Looking forward to playing with it some more.

battery packs and other equipment is tiresome. With these
Lugging around strobes, umbrellas, battery packs and other equipment is tiresome. With these, I can just slap them on my external flashes and create the lighting effects I desire. I purchased two. They fit snug into the dish, unlike the bigger 16" and 20" beauty dishes I own. Seems so simple to add that little attachment, but I am happy with the new replacement Polaroids.

This is a really great product. The reflector dishes are great and love the orange to assist with skin tones. You can diffuse the donut hole by simply adding a coffee can lid or other semi transparent lid over the top.The light is portable and amazing. Worth It!

Works pretty well.
This is my first shot at using a beauty light and from a functional standpoint, I would say this would be a good starting point. I haven't used all the plates yet, but the sliver one, for some reason, doesn't fasten down very tight. The rest are fine. Mine had a small dent in the screw hole, which I fixed. This one, because of the diameter of of the dish, tends to point a fairly concentrated light, so distance from subject or flash power will have to be considered. The effect it creates is actually really nice. It attached to my speed lights with no issue. Overall, construction is quite good.

Worth every cent
I bought this as an inexpensive experiment. I had no idea really what the effect would be, but I am always up for a new and interesting technique. I was very pleased with this item. For $30 it really is a neat little toy to have in my kitbag. There is something of a "sweet spot" in terms of distance from the model... but you'll quickly understand that with experimentation. It's a different effect to a softbox, but similar in principle. The look changes according to which centre piece you attach. The gold one that's on the picture gives my favourite kind of light, but there are a few options included. It's well built, attaches to any flash because of an elastic velcro arrangement. I haven't seen many photos that have the effect that this creates, so it will give a unique look to your portraits for sure.
