First Position Scale Studies for the Violin, Book One

It’s true what they say… practicing scales does not have to be boring, and Harvey proves that in this edition. Playing through this book is more fun than JUST playing straight scales. 13 major scales (including two separate octaves of G,D,A,Bb) are included, each with 4 pages of rhythmic/slur variations (and the occasional note change, after the initial scale). I love that the variations change from scale to scale, covering time signatures and rhythms commonly found in late-beginner literature (dotted quarter note, triplets, 6/8 time, etc).The large font is easy to read and notes are not overcrowded on the page. I find that the “building arpeggio” section is helpful to explain how to find arpeggios from the scale.(The Two Octaves book is also quite excellent, when you’ve mastered this one!)

I have been playing the violin for less than a year and this book has helped me improve my violin playing.The First position scales in this book include G Major First and Second octave, D Major First and Second octave, A Major First and Second octave, C Major , Bb Major, E Major. There are slur exercises, trills, different scale rhythms in different timings for each scale. At the end of the book, a section called Fast Scale Scale Studies is provided which includes a effective workout involving all the scales.Overall this book is simple and power packed for beginners. The only thing missing in this book is the Contents page, but it doesn't matter much to me. I'm a beginner violinist and I would recommend this book to newbies.
