Poodle Training: Dog Training for your Poodle puppy Paperback – March 14, 2019

if you want a loving companion, this book is all wrong. I feel sorry for anyone that follows the advice given in this book - and for their dog. My dog is my companion and my friend. My sister's dog is her companion and friend. They are both poodles. Both of them understand a lot of words - and I mean a lot of words, and I mean truly understand. Why in the world would anyone want a dog they don't talk to, that they don't have on their lap or lying next to them when watching tv, that they don't take with them whenever they can, that isn't walking next to them all the time, and that just in general wants to be with you all the time. This book makes it sound like the whole idea of having a dog is not to love each other, but for the person to control and dominate in every aspect. It takes away any idea that a dog has a mind and can use it. Here is an example: I was sitting on the bottom step of my staircase. My sister had gone to the bathroom - downstairs. Her dog, Annie, started to go past me to go upstairs. I said, "she didn't go upstairs, she went to the bathroom". Annie immediately turned around and went directly to the downstairs bathroom - which is at the other end of the downstairs. Another example: My sister used the expression "put a lid on it" when she wanted Annie to stop barking. One night my family was sitting at the table eating, and someone left the lid off the ketchup bottle. My husband said "put the lid on it". Annie stood up and looked at him with an expression that said, "I don't know what you are talking about, I didn't make a sound!" If someone says the word "coke" in conversation, my dog looks up to see if we are getting ready to go to McDonalds. If I put on my shoes and pick up my purse, my dog jumps up and is ready to go because he thinks we are going somewhere. However, if I say, "I'm just going to Home Depot", disappointment sets in, he sits back down, because he not only knows he cannot go, but he also knows it could be a long trip and I will be gone a while. All this is just ordinary conversation - no special excitement of inflection in voice. In addition to normal conversation, our dogs know their own names, each other's names, our names, my grandkids names, the name of their toys, several (many) words for treats, included spelled words. They know that if they are slow in coming in when they are called and we say "closing" it means the door is closing and they better get in fast - and they do. But mostly, they are here to love us and to be loved. When my back hurts, my dog knows and will lie down with his back against my back and give me his comfort and heat - better than any kind of heating pad. Now, if you are going to say my dog doesn't know who is boss - you would be wrong. Totally wrong. Our dogs know we are alpha- but they also know they are treasured parts of the family. THIS BOOK IS SO WRONG AND IF YOU WANT A LOVING COMPANION, THIS IS HOW TO MAKE SURE THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN.

Not that great. Would buy something else

This book is a wonderful source of information, specifically directed toward Poodle Puppies. It is written with clarity and explanations for all of the concepts presented. I will definitely purchase the next two books in this series!

The most important thing is to understand how a dog sees his world, what is “normal” for him and how you can use this to your advantage. In addition, the characteristics of each breed are significant when you get beyond the basic training phase. Your Poodle will show characteristics which are different to those of a Husky, for example, and this is predominantly what you need to consider during training.Author try to help every beginner, not only to understand his dog better, but also to know exactly how to get the best results, step-by-step, so that you can achieve a close, positive and trusting human-dog relationship.

It's a fine primer but all this info is available for free on the internet.

This was a very thorough and enjoyable introduction to owning a poodle. I used the training techniques, which were written well and easy to understand. Also, the history and temperament of the Poodle gave me great insight. I wish I had gotten this book when I first got my Poodle. This book is very well written by the author and i highly recommend this book to all of you guys.

Poodles are smart little pups. Following her thoughtful suggestions makes like easier even before your little guy has mastered the command

Too short and not detailed enough . Not very poodle specific. Wish I had not bought it. There are better general dog training books.
