When it says "assisted opening," is that similar to a "switchblade," and if so, aren't those illegal in many places? Pardon my ignorance.

Switch blade is a push button type release, assisted opening is done with a lever on the side of handle, not as dangerous as a switchblade. It makes it harder to open in your pocket on their own. They're not illegal in most states, I don't know about New York, nothings legal there....LOL... Like a large soda!! Hope this helps you out..

How in the world do u close this thing?

There is a small metal lever that holds the knife in place when open, located inside the body. The lever will have small ridges where to push. Then push this lever to the side (it will only move one direction) and while pushing the lever start to close the knife. After the knife begins to move it will close the rest of the way easily, you will have to move your finger/thumb to close it all the way. Next time you open the knife, watch the lever lock into place to keep the knife open. This is how most fold-able knives work.

There's a button you press but it doesn't close easily and you have to push it back in using the hole in the blade while holding the button in at the same time.
