Q: Can anyone tell me if this is a newer version of the Pentec EnerGel BL17-A?

These are a newer version of Pentel's old model EnerGel pens. I don't recall the older version model number, but they were my go to pen for at least a decade. They got almost impossible to find until I found this newer version. The features of this one are similar if not identical to my old favorite. A really nice reliable long lasting quick drying writing instrument.

Q: Do these pens smudge when used with a highlighter or when erased over?

They haven't for me. The ink dries pretty quickly. Really only smudges on glossy paper (expected).
