The Art of Scientific Investigation

Incredible! For anyone getting into research this is a must read. It’s unbelievable to me how much of this holds up today when it was written in 1950s. It also was really cool to hear stories of some of the greatest scientists to have lived. Highly recommend it and it taught me a lot.

This book shows that those people back then had it going on and were sure of it.

In 90's I was reading this book's Chinese version in college. I believe it has been translated into more languages. Now I read it again in English in a Christmas holiday after 10 years post-PhD research. It is no doubt a wonderful book in demonstrating and educating the real world of research science and scientists. Beautiful language and great story-telling stytle/technique.I do not recommend it to absolute beginners - it may be just too abstract. I think it suits more the researchers with several years of experience - they can better understand, appreciate and take advantage of it. They may even add their own experiences and stories to it when they read and say "yes I had that too". Or after reading it they can intentionally use or strengthen some aspects which they vaguely realized before.

This is a great book for those who are working on a masters or Phd. Help you realize that observation is important as collecting numbers. So often in modern research it is all quantitative with little qualitative data. I read this 30 years ago, and gave a copy to my son who is working on his Phd. in chemistry/ nano biology.

The copy was in excellent condition. This is one of the rare gems that is a must have for anyone interested in research.

A classic review with much sage advice, but times are changing so an update is needed.

This book definitely stretched my thinking. My background is not scientific in nature and most of my writing products are not scientific, but this book definitely helps me thinking how to write and how to investigate and research for my thesis! Definitely recommended!

I consider it simply the best book I have ever read about the scientific approach. Although it's very old, it's content is still actual. It offers many behind-the-scene anecdotes which are essential to understand what being a scientist means. The chapter division makes reading it very easy, especially because you can jump from one chapter to another.

I felt like I understood much better a lot of things that had happened to me during my very short research experience. Although written 70 years ago, still extremely relevant! I definitely recommend reading it!

That's very good book for a scientist who is starting his career scientific research.It helped me a lot as a research scientist. Even a Nobel Prize winner could use it too in his research.
